The Swarm is a name that has been given to a hive-minded race of biological assimilators. Being comprised of various levels of hive mind, they had no real concept of identity beyond ‘us’ and ‘not us’. Scientifically speaking, they are not classified as a “Species” or “Race”, but instead would be better organized as an entire “Domain” of their own. Most exhibit insectoid, lizard, or fungal features, and a single ‘creature’ is often compromised of many different entities working together. The Swarm is known for evolving and adapting to new environments quickly, changing their features and composition so that they are better suited to the environment they are in. In their portion of the galaxy they spread out, assimilating other species and evolving till they ran into other sentient creatures. Initial confrontations with The Swarm were hostile until they encountered psychically active individuals. The realization that there was other sentient life gave The Swarm a reason to stop and the conflicts quickly ended.
Over the next few years, a series of diplomatic broods were evolved in order to understand the complicated worlds of other sentients. There were many ‘incidents’ in those first few decades while The Swarm grew to understand ideas like language, property, liberty, individualism, society, art. Smaller hives with a single mind are sent to understand various races so that they can adapt and evolve in their own path and bring fresher ideas to the hive clusters. Even now after 200 years, the broad and varied details of culture escape The Swarm’s broods.
